Volunteer Walk Leaders are the Wonderful Backbone of the Walking School Bus Program!

  2. Recruitment: WSB Programs continually recruit volunteers each school year.  You are looking for motivated, reliable adults:

  3. Background check volunteers – Use the school district’s system to background check volunteers.  This is usually standard procedure but also helps parents feel more comfortable with the program.
  4. Conduct volunteer training and distribute equipment:

  5. Volunteer Heather Curtis & EECS Route 2Offer on-going support & encouragement to WSB volunteers:
    1. Greet the volunteers each morning or let them know where they can find you in the school to check in
    2. Do e-mail check-ins about specific issues, friendly reminders, holidays, snow days, etc
    3. Offer once-a-semester recognition – through newsletters, coffee & bagels, cards from students, donated gift cards, etc.
    4. Ask volunteers to complete online program evaluation once a semester
    5. Gather equipment from volunteers at the end of each school year and check over inventory for any replacement needs
  6. Planning for Relaunch: In August – use an online survey to check-in with previous volunteers regarding whether they will return.
